ok, so i keep avoiding this, b/c i have so many things i wanted to write about and am too busy to play catch up on.
at the moment though, i'm working on my exegesis paper and just thought of something that is boggling my poor lizard mind...
my passage is Genesis 8:20-9:17. it's post-flood, noah's sacrifice, God's commands on how to live in the "new" world, and the covenant of God with noah. the title is "Real Christians Eat Steak and Watch Rainbows" ;-) and a large portion of it, when i finish writing it, will cover questions about the death penalty... so it's random. but i'm in the middle of my summary of the passage at the moment... and i thought of this, wrote it, and then turned it into the world's largest footnote:
"Many of us have heard this story since we were little. We ?know? it inside and out, but how many times have you actually stopped to look at it as Noah would have, for the first time? You?ve just spent a very long time building an impossibly large boat, been in the first rain storm, been cooped up in a boat w/ the same seven people and numerous animals for way too long while the rest of life on the planet is wiped out and you sit there taking care of animals desperately holding onto the promise of the One who told you to build the boat, and then you step out into this new world. You talk to God. You get to talk to God... He tells you that that all these animals you?ve been living with for an interminable amount of time will now be afraid of you, which you probably think is great because you don?t really want to see them anymore at the moment either. And then, He tells you that you can eat meat? Did that sound strange? Was it exciting? Were you apprehensive? What did the first bite of steak taste like? Was it grilled, fried, barbeque? Who cooked it? Did God?s permission automatically teach you to be a chef? Nobody?s ever cooked meat before. How do you know what to eat? Did it get burned the first few times? Why didn?t you give up when you (or your wife) kept turning it into charcoal? Why did you persist if you didn?t know if it was good or not? Did you want to go back to your salads? And how did you pick which animal to eat first? Was it the one that annoyed you the most during all your days cooped up in the ark? Was it the ugliest one, since it?s harder to kill cute things? Was it the slowest? The fastest? This whole story is amazingly mind-boggling if you really think about it. "
